LA trip, July, 2007

Nick called me up a couple weeks ago, and proposed coming out to LA for a visit, and used Craig's CD release show as an excuse to come out July 28th. Wendy and I took up Nick's invitation, and we arrived Friday night at 11:15pm PST, which gave us just enough time to hang out with Craig back at their house for a bit before going to bed. It was great visiting with Craig, an old friend of mine from Compaq days...

Next morning we left the house around 9:00, picked up Nick's friend Lori, and drove up the Pacific coast line for a hike I researched. I had made reservations at a beach cafe halfway into the hike for 12:45pm.

The hike was extremely splendid! The views of the blue-green ocean were outstanding from atop Point Dume. We were fortunate to see a seal, and a school of 8 dolphins close to the shore. The water was refreshing. The air was a bit hazy, which limited the long distance views, but overall we all enjoyed the hike a ton.

A look at El Matador Beach, near Malibu:

There were people rock climbing on the north face of Point Dume ahead...

Check out the seal on the right...

Wendy is a little surprised at the coldness of the water, but it felt refreshing after you got used to it...

We were lucky to see dolphins!!!

Lunch at Bob's Paradise Cafe. The fish tacos weren't that great, but the unlimited free peanuts were...

The trip back along the beach...

After we got back from Malibu, we showered, and drove up to West Hollywood for Craig's show. We left plenty early, and Nick drove us around Hollywood, while Lori pointed out all the sites. She was a great tour guide.

We ate at a place near Molly Malone's, they site of Craig's show. Wendy and I had sushi, Lori and Nick had Thai food. Wendy and I walked over to "The Grove" which had a Farmer's Market during the opening act. There was tons of great food, and cool stores. Wendy bought an apron. We arrived back at the club at 9pm and watched Craig's show. Nick introduced us to a lot of his friends.

They dressed me up in some of Nick's clothes, and Craig's shoes, to get an LA look...

Sunday morning we left ~9:00 for Venice. We took a bus to Venice Beach, and walked back to Santa Monica, passing the bizarre beach shops and street vendors. Midway we stopped at the Farmer's Market for lunch (see pictures for the huge pancake serving I had). When we got back to Santa Monica, we visited Lori's store, which sold rock n' roll art, and ate some really cool Yogi ice cream with fruit. It tasted a bit sour like cultured vanilla yogurt, but ice-cream textured.

Lunch at the Farmer's Market. I got 3 giant pancakes! Nick and Wendy got paninis, and they helped me eat pancakes...

Then we decided to hit the Getty museum in West LA. When we got there, Nick was completely exhausted and slept in the car, while Wendy and I went to the museum. We were wondering why it was such a long walk up this hill to get to the museum entrance, when we saw a tram nearby shuttling people up. By that time we were already half way there, and continued on. When we arrived at the entrance, we were stunned at the monstrous estate. There was so much to see and we only had a little over an hour. So we mainly hung out in the outdoor areas with beautiful landscape, architecture and flowers. We'll have to spend a good half day there some other time.

Off to the Getty museum Sunday afternoon:

And something we passed on the way to the airport:

We passed a 7-11 that had been turned into the Kwik-E-Mart from Simpsons before arriving at the airport...

We stopped at an In-N-Out fast food burger place, something Wendy was hoping very much to do, as it's her favorite burger place, located only on the west coast. We said good-bye to Nick as he dropped us off at the airport, and made it back to Fort Collins safe and sound.
